Nestled among the slopes of Yangmingshan in Taipei’s Shilin District, the Floriculture Experiment Center is a serene haven. It was set up in 1949 as the Yangmingshan Demonstration Citrus Farm and was focused on growing fruit-bearing trees. However, the local climate is well-suited for the cultivation of other types of trees and flowers, so the farm was later converted to the collection and cultivation of plants such as camellias and azaleas. Handed over to the Taipei City Government in the 1970s, the center was transformed into a popular destination where people can take a leisurely stroll and learn about plants.

Spanning approximately four hectares—half the size of the Taipei Botanical Garden—the center boasts professional plant research facilities and vibrant flower gardens. The grounds are divided into zones featuring camellias, azaleas, herbs, maples, cherry blossoms, and greenhouses. Seasonal highlights include cherry blossoms in spring, lotus flowers in summer, maple leaves in autumn, and plum blossoms in winter. The greenhouses host a variety of ferns and succulents, offering visitors lush greenery and an immersive nature experience. Every visit unveils a new floral display, ensuring a constantly fresh, captivating experience.

The Green Classroom regularly hosts workshops on floral crafts, drawing gardening enthusiasts from across the city. These sessions range from basic planting techniques to advanced plant care, making weekends a popular time when visitors can relax and enjoy hands-on interaction with plants. Beyond the center’s botanical features, the surrounding natural beauty is equally alluring. A stroll along the trails reveals tranquil forests and serene ponds that provide a peaceful escape from the urban hustle. It’s no wonder this spot has become a favourite weekend retreat for many.
